About Felt:
Felt is a fabric which is unwoven. Felt gets its property due to entanglement of fibers with each other. Felt is formed by applying heat, moisture, and pressure on wool or fur. First, heat and moisture is applied on the fibers. Then outer scales come out. In the soap or an alkaline environment, these fibers slide freely with each other resulting in a fine entanglement of these fibers. Also, there is a bonding among these fibers, as there is protein content in them. This results in a stronger entanglement. Lastly, pressure is applied so that it transforms into a fine fabric in form of felt.The felt items are very ancient in origin. Its first use dates back to 6500-3000 BC which is evident from the wall paintings of the time in Turkey. Another record of the use of the felt dates back to 5th century BC when Roman soldiers equipped themselves with felt breastplates, boots, and socks. From that time till date, felt items are still in use in some parts of the world where there are harshly cold conditions, like Mongolia, Turkey, Scandinavia, Russia etc.

These days, felt items are gaining popularity more as fancy items and fashionable goods. As such, demand of such items are gradually going upwards and large volumes of felt items, in form of Purse, hand bags, slippers, hats etc are exported from Nepal each year. A conch shell is an essential implement in both Hindu and Buddhist ritual. Some shells in their natural condition ar used as containers for consecrated water and often placed on top of a water pot on an altar. Others, such as those examples, are used as trumpets. Hindus in India believe that the sound of a conch shell drives away evil spirits.Presumably the Buddhist also adopted the same practice for their rituals, and hence the custom is prevalent in Tibet. Conch shell horns are blown as a sound offering. The larger shells are blown from a monastery rooftop to gather the monks together. The "metal shield and decorations make it more practical to utilize the shell, which might otherwise be broken, or not be of the right shape or size.A conch shell is one of the eight auspicious symbols of Buddhism. When a conch is placed on an altar as an emblem, it signifies the Buddha´s proclamation of his teachings

Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava reveals himself in the form of a rainbow. According to Esoteric meditators, when they tried to recall the image of Padmasambhava during meditation, they would sometimes see in their imagination the master turning into a rainbow.

Padmasambhava Thangka Painting

Padmasambhava, the Lotus – born – popularly known as Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master is revered throughout the Himalayan ranges as a Second Buddha. Invited from India in the eighth century to subjugate the forces inhibiting the spread of Sakyamuni's teachings, he managed to transform hitherto hostile powers into guardians and protectors of the pure dharma and, in the process, left an indelible mark on the entire Himalayan region. Guru Rinpoche is surrounded by various adepts and deities of the Ningma order. Presiding over all, in the center of the highest plane of the painting, is Amitabha Buddha, whom Padmasambhava is considered to be an emanation.

By his sides are Padmasambhava’s consorts, the Indian princess Mahadarava and the Tibetan Dakini (Khadama) Yeshe Khado. Guru Rinpoche is wearing lavish robes, representing the amount of honor he received in coming to Tibet. His characteristic head-dress has the ear – lappets turned up so that he can listen to all beings. Guru Rinpoche is holding a skull – cap filled with Tantric liquids, a Vajra, and a staff (large heavy stick) with a banner, human heads, and a trident (Khatvanga). A banner is one of the eight auspicious symbols (Krashi Taggyad) and a trident (Tsesum) symbolizes the Three Jewels (Konchog Sum) and the Tripitaka (Denod Sum). In his right hand Guru Rinpoche holds a Vajra in Vajratarjani mudra. In quite a literal sense, Guru Rinpoche's mark is to be found throughout the Himalayan ranges in and around the many caves he used for meditation. At these sites one can still see handprints and footprints of the Precious Master impressed into solid rock, mute testimony to the extraordinary power this fully accomplished yogi and Tantric magician exercised over the external and internal elements.

Guru Milarepa Thangka Painting

Guru Milerapa is believed to be the most beloved and highly accomplished Buddhist master of Tibet. His songs on enlightened experiences are still sung today by the learned and lay people alike. Guru Milarepa during his early career committed much evil deeds through black magic and sending hailstorms too. Guru Milarepa later regretted his evil deeds and eventually found his worthy and enlightened Guru Marpa, who put him on trials and hardships in other to test his guru devotion and eagerness to practice dharma teachings. Milarepa later confirmed on him the series of empowerments and essential teachings of Mahamudra which he received from Guru Naropa.
Guru Milarepa meditated on these tantric teachings with great zeal in wild and forlorn mountains for six years and eventually achieved the realization of Vajradharahood in his very life time. Guru Milarepa is generally seen on cotton clad dresss seated over antilope skin with Lalitasana posture. Guru Milarepa wears a meditation band. His right hand is generally put on the ears symbolizing that he is listening to the voices of beings in lower realms. Guru Milarepa has great compassion for them and sentient beings in general. His body is usually blue or green in color. It is said that during his meditation Guru Milarepa ate nothing but nettles for the long period of time and his skin thus assumed a greenish hue. Vajrayogini Wrathful Statue, Nepal

Vajrayogini is a class of deities called Dakini belongs to the highest Yoga tantra. She is also called Naro-Dakini. She is a celestial female Buddha form who manifested herself in an initiatory vision to the great Pandit Mahasiddha Naropa. She can be a human or non human who can traverse through air. She posese supernatural wisdom and power and can assit the practitioner of Vajrayana in eliminating obstacles and obstruction to his practice. She can even confer great siddhi of liberation and omniscience.

She holds a Kartri in her right hand and a skull bowl in her left. She carries a garland of served heads and tramples upon her own emanations Bhirabha and Kalaratro beneath her feet. She holds a Khatvanga and the crrok of her elbow paralle to her body position. She is almost naked wearing only ornaments.

Jambhala Lord of Yakasha Kubera Statue

Kubera(Kuver/Kuber) is also called the lord of Yakshas. He is one of the four great kings who rules the first heaven of the desire realm in the north Himalaya. He is talso known as the lord of wealth. He rules over the city of the north of Sumeru mountain, supremly beautiful , adorned with precious jewels. It is said that his city is as beautiful as Sukhavati heaven, in the west Himalya. He has five princes and has 28 messengers under his command. They are his retinue.
Like the three other kings, he was also instructed by Buddha Shakyamuni to protect the Buddha dharma in Jambudvipa in the north direction.
his Kubera Statue is crafted by the experienced artist Mr Shakya of Patan, NEPAl, who hav been crafted the Statue since third generation. This Statue is crafted under the lost wax method.The statue is copper alloy with 24 Karat Gold full Gilded.

In Nepalese Buddhist traditon Kubera also known as Vaisravana is worshipped singly and is very popular. Newar Buddhist women take the image of Vaishravan out of rice flour during Yomari-punhi festival (December/January). It is also customary to keep images of Vaishravan (kubera) in the treasury room or inside the treasure box.

The worshipping of four guardian deities was introduced in China by Pandit Amogh Vajra during the eight century.

Mahakala Thangka Painting

The finely painted Mahakala, with all details conforming to the one appearance in which he is always depicted. His body is white, his face wrathful, he has three eyes, and his half-smiling mouth is red. He has six arms; his main right hand holds a wish fulfilling jewel in front of his chest, his upper right hand should hold a chopper and his lower right hand plays a drum. His main left arm holds a skull cup with a vase in it filled with jewels. His upper left hand should hold a trident and his lower left hand should hold a vajra hook which here resembles a khatvanga. He wears the skin of an elephant on his shoulders, a garment of many scarves ornamented with bone beads and jewels, and a girdle of freshly severed heads. Beneath each foot is a deity with an elephant head carrying a radish in his hands, and a mongoose with jewels spitting from its mouth. In the crown on top of White Mahakala’s head there is an image of Vajradhara sitting cross-legged and holding a jewel, a bell and a vajra.

Ghau or the Prayer box is a small prayer box used traditionally by Tibetans as portable shrines where prayers and sacred relics are kept and used during their travel to hold their scared deity inside. Now, "prayer box" pendants are often used as jewelry or personal adornment. This pendant Ghau is beautifully carved in pure silver with 24 Kfull gold plated and beautifully decorated with semi precious stone Coral, Lapislazuli, Ruby and Turquoise.

On the top of the Ghau is the Mahakal of Lapislazuli, filigree works.

The victorious hair crowned mother buddha. She is a female bodhisattva with three faces and eight arms and one of the three reverend deities of longevity. her middle face and eight arms are white, symbolizing the elimination fo disasters. There is an eye on each side of herforehead and a coronal is twisting around her painted on her crown. As required by the sutra of measurements for the construction of staturs, this mother buddha should be moulded as a maiden of 16 years old. Half of hair should be braided with the remaining hair hanging doen and the tip being longer than her elbows. her face should resemble sesame and her eyes red lotus petals.

The yellow face on the left side symbolizes bebefit and longevity and the blue face onthe right side symbolizes the defeat of devils. The mother buddha is holding a double dorje on the one hand of her main arm and rope on the other hand. While the palm of herthird hand is facing the front to graitfy peoples wishes. Tibetan Calendar~ The cylce of twelve animals

The Tibetan calendar is a unique system which is lunar-based. India also has a lunar calendar, but it is different to the Tibetan and starts the year on different date. It has only 360 days in the year and a complicated system of using skip-days (tsi chad-pa) and extra days (tsi lhag-pa). The new moon always starts the month, and the full moon falls on the fifteenth day.
As the lunar phase defines a month, every month is 30 days and a year has twelve months. The lunar day is about one minute shorter than a solar day, which is 24.00 hours. To make the calendar correspond with solar days, it occasionally adds a 13th month.

Each year is ruled by one of the five elements and one of twelve animal signs as in Chinese calendars, but they start the year on different dates and the months have different lengths. So it is very important not to mix Tibetan and Chinese systems together.

Tibetan years follow twelve-year animal cycles.
One element rules two years in a row and then changes to the next element,
while an animal sign will rule for one year at a time. The Year 2000 was an Iron-Dragon year
and the year 2001 was an Iron-Snake year. The year 2002 was a Water-Horse year, and so forth.
The 60 year cycle of all combinations of the five elements and twelve animals is called Rab-byung.
We are now living in the 17th. Rab-byung, which began in 1987.

The first year in the Tibetan calendar dates back to the Kalachakra year, 1027. Actually the system of animal years already started in the middle of 600 A.D. under the influence of the teachings of a Chinese princess who married the Tibetan king, Songtsen Gampo. The system of 60 year cycles, Rab-byung, was introduced around the 10th century and in the 11th century it was widely used in Tibet Kalachakra teachings were blended with Elemental astrology, and when Tibetan scholars made the very first Tibetan calendar they used Rab-byung for counting the years.

As Kalachakra teachings were the foundation for chronological calculations,
it was decided that the official date of introduction of Kalachakra would be Year One.
Year 1027 was a Fire-Rabbit year and from then a Fire-Rabbit year became the first year in Tibetan Rab-byung, while the Chinese 60 year cycle always begins with a Wood-Mouse Year.

Aparmita Statue seated on double lotus throne 4'' Statue

APARMITA - AMITAYUS is the name given to Amitabha in his character of bestower of longevity. Aparmita or Amitayus may be turned either a "Crowned Buddha" or a Boddhisatwa and is therefore richly clad and wears the thirteen ornaments. His hair is painted blue and falls on either side to this elbows or may be curiously coiled. He is seated like a Buddha and his hands lie on his lap in Dhyana Mudra holding the ambrosia vase, his special emblem. The vase is richly decorated and from the cover fall four strings of beads which represent sacred pills.
For obtaining long life the lamaist ceremony is held in a curious mixture of Buddhism and demon-worship. In the preliminary worship, the pills made from buttered dough and the ambrosia brewed from spirit or beer and offered in a skull bowl to the great image of Aparmita. The lama then places a vajra on the ambrosia vase, which the image of Amtiayus holds in its lap, and applies a cord, which is attached to the vajra, to his own heart. The wine in the ambrosia vase is then consecrated and the people partake of it as well as of the sacred pills with the firm conviction that their lives will be prolonged through their faith in Aparmita.

An old Greek helps the Artisan in Nepal

I sometimes go to the Market in Germany to sell the buddhist items. Last time in Cologne, I have some Tingsha on my table for sale. There comes a one old man and grab the Tingsha like a child. I was very suprised, how he act like the child. He was not so happy about the Price. Then I gave him the good price, the man bought the Tingsha immediately.

He told me that he is from Greece and living in Germany for a long time. As he was a child, kids in Greece have a same like Cymbal a musical insturment and went from home to home playing the instrument asking sweets or some money during the Christmas time. At that time this man as a child had not enough money to buy the Cymbal and now after 63 years, he can fullfill his wishes. This short story makes me happy that someone is happy buying goods from me. The man didnot know that buying the Cymbal also help the Artisan in Nepal. Gold Bless this man.....

What is Tingsha?

Tingsha is a ritual artifact used by Budhist Monks as well is in Shamanist traditions. The Tingsha is also made of seven metals (like the singing bowls) As with the Singing Bowl, the Tingsha creates a meditative vibration but is more commonly used for calling one forth into the here and now. The striking sound of the Tingsha has the ability to call one forth as well as clearing any disturbing energies in the moment. The Tingsha brings clarity and spaciousness to any space.

Ceremonially, a Tingsha can be used to represent the beginning, ending or transition within a ceremony. Many Yoga instructors use Tingshas coming out of Shivasana or the "meditation" part of the class.

Maghe Sankranti

Maghe Sankranti is the beginning of the holy month of Magh, usually the mid of January. It brings an end to the ill-omened month of Poush (mid-december) when all religious ceremonies are forbidden. Even if it is considered the coldest day of the year, it marks the coming of warmer weather and better days of health and fortune.

This day is said to be the most significant day for holy bathing despite the weather. This ritual usually takes place at the union of sacred rivers and streams. Sankhamole, on the banks of the holy Bagmati river, below Patan, is thought to be amongst the most sacred sites for this purpose, though there has been a decline in the fulfillment of this ritual in the recent years due to water pollution in the river. But people still go in the wee hours of dawn just to sprinkle themselves with the water. They pay homage to various deities specially the temple of Red Machindranath and Agima Ta.

In addition to holy bathing and worship of shrines, certain auspicious foods like till laddoos (seasame seeds ball cakes), chaku(molasys), ghee (clarified butter), sweet potatoes, khichari (mixture of rice and lentils) and green leaf spinach are taken on this day. Families come together and share these delights. Married daughters and families are invited to parental homes for festivities and blessings. Yet another occasion to renew family ties. Many homes have pujas (religious ceremonies) conducted by priests with chanting from holy books, for which they receive alms.

Like any other holy celebration Maghi Sankranti also has a legend of its own. It recalls that once a merchant from the town of Bhadgoan despite of his thriving business noticed that his supply of seasame seeds hadn't diminished. When looking into the matter he found an idol of the Lrod Vishnu hidden deep beneath the seeds. Since, then on this day the Til Madhav idol is worshipped with the belief that god will continue to be generous in the supply of food and wealth on the Bhadgoan community. It's also the day commemorating the death of Viswapitamaha, the elderly grandfather of two families of Pandavas and Kauravas, between whom the famous battle of Mahabharat took place. He was determined not to die until the way to the region of gods opened. While lying on the bed of arrows he discovered words of wisdom on life and death. Eventually, through his free will he succumbed to death. Hence it's believed that those who die on this day go to heaven, released from the burden of rebirth.

Maghi Sankranti, is yet another occasion which renews the faith of Nepalese people in the heavenly powers.

It is a well known fact that Hinduism and Buddhism are the two major religions of Nepal, each having it's own rules and rituals. However, like most festivals of Nepal, both Hindus and Buddhist unite to celebrate the festival of Indra Jatra. This festival is celebrated by both Hindus and Buddhists with great enthusiasm. It is also believed that Indra Jatra is a festival of classical dances. It is on this very day when one is able to observe numerous varieties of traditional dances. The festival is named after Lord Indra who is known as the god of rain and also as the king of heaven.

The festival of Indra Jatra continues for eight days with much rejoicing, singing, dancing and feasting. People from all over Nepal, mostly those who live within the Kathmandu Valley, gather at the Hanuman Dhoka in Kathmandu. The first day of the festival is viewed by a large number of people. On that day, a long wooden pole is erected in front of the ancient Royal Palace at Hanuman Dhoka, in order to propitiate Lord Indra, the"god of rain". Classical dancers also assemble at the spot, wearing different kinds of traditional masks and costumes and dancing around the courtyard of Hanuman Dhoka to celebrate Indra's visit.

On the third day of the festival of Indra Jatra, the living goddess Kumari is taken out in a procession in a chariot. "Kumari", the "living goddess", is considered to be an incarnation of the goddess "Taleju". Chariots of Kumari, Ganesha and Bhairav are taken around the city for three days. According to Hindu beliefs Ganesha is the son of Shiva and Parvati who has a head of an elephant and Bhairav is another form of Lord Shiva himself.

The king of Nepal, the only Hindu king in the world, also pays homage to the Kumari during this period. The festival's many interesting dances, including the Procession of Living Goddess-Mahakali, Mahalaxmi and Dasha Avatara masked dances are staged in Kathmandu Durbar Square, near the Kumari Temple. The "Dasha Avatara" refers to the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu who is one of the Hindu's Holy trinity. The excitement of the festival of Indra Jatra comes to an end on the last evening of the festival when the long wooden pole erected on the first day is lowered with religious ceremonies, animal sacrifices and ritual gestures.

Gunla is a sacred month dedicated to Lord Buddha. This festival commemorates the auspicious "rains retreat" when the Buddha, over 2,500 years ago, led his close disciples into solitary meditation and preached to them the essence of his principles. Accordingly, monks and nuns go into retreat during the rainy season. Lay Buddhists also spend the month in prayer and fasting. They visit Swayambhunath and other shrines every day early in the morning. Groups of people can be seen making their way to Swayambhunath in the misty morning accompanied by musicl bands with thumping drums carrying small clay figures of the Buddha and stupas. The Gunla Lakhe masked dancer enlivens the festivals with his street performances. A number of religious events are held c during this period. Sacred texts (saphu) and ancient scroll paintings (paubha) are brought out for display at monastic courtyards all over the city. The most extraordinary collection of centuries old texts written in gold and silver paint I can be seen within the courtyard of Thambahi (Thamel). The festival of Gunla climaxes on the day of Poncho Daan, the Festival of Five Offerings which is held in Patan, the auspicious ceremony during which offerings are made to monks and household priests. The priests chant prayers as they accept the gifts and shower blessings in return.

Thangkas without a brocade require some kind of frames. Some guidelines below.

C U S T O M F R A M I N G
Generally made of wood, often painted with gold, custom hard frames give the best protection for a thangka and are many times the only possibility with higher quality artworks.

There are some important things that you don't necessarily get from an averge framing shop without asking: All cardboard should be acid-free. It would be better if the paints do not touch the glass. This can be done with a colored cardboard frame between the glass and the painting (the red inner frame in the photo). All the thangkas have a 1 inch border, usually red, which will be hidden behind the cardboard frame. Also it would be better if the framer didn't use glue to fix the painting.

G L A S S
The thangkas can be framed with or without a glass. The drawback of using a glass is reflecting light, but it has many benefits. Cleaning, protecting, moving and preserving the thangka becomes easier. We, ourselves, use a glass with every framed thangka.

For the people, who can afford the absolute best, there is special non-reflecting glass, which is even difficult to see. We sometimes tried matte glass to avoid reflecting light, but didn't like the result much. It is very important to protect the painting from direct sunlight. It may be possible to find special UV-glass to protects the paints from ultraviolet rays.

R E A D Y-M A D E H A R D F R A M E S
Ready-made frames are an affordable way to quickly frame a thangka. If the size is good and the background carboard is of right color, they can look quite good. One problem is that the paint touches the glass and may stick after some years. Also, the edges of the canvas are not always cleanly cut. Both of these problems are solved, if you cut a colored cardboard frame, and place it between the the painting and the glass, as explained above with the custom frames.

In a temple, thangka are uses for worship and meditation of a priest, and practice of specific Buddhism.
Thangka are intended to serve as a record of, and guide for contemplative experience. For example, you might be instructed by your teacher to imagine yourself as a specific figure in a specific setting. You could use a thangka as a reference for the details of posture, attitude, colour, clothing. etc., of a figure located in a field, or in a palace, possibly surrounded by many other figures of meditation teachers, your family, etc.. In this way, thangkas are intended to convey iconographic information in a pictorial manner. A text of the same meditation would supply similar details in written descriptive form.
In Tibetan culture Thangka is used for the time of the ceremony on the 49 the of the reparative who passed away. Moreover, it is used also in the case of the congratulation of a marriage ceremony or the New Year.

One Thousands-armed Lokeshvara ~ Sahasrabhuja Lokeshvara

This is one of the many forms of Avalokiteshvara comprising 108 as depicted in the Kanak Caitya Mahavihara of Kathmandu.He manifests in many forms in order to help sentient beings. His 1,000-armed form is described as follows:

His body is white. He has 1,000 arms and one thousand eyes. However his original two hands and two eyes are not included. Out of 1,000 arms of Avalokiteshvara, 38 arms of this lokeshvara are depicted with various symbols.

In Buddhist legend, the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara vowed to liberate all beings from suffering, but when he realized the magnitude of his task, his head exploded into countless pieces. His body was then reassembled by the Buddha Amitabha and the bodhisattva Vajrapani - the "wielder of the thunderbolt" into this omniscient form, with eleven heads and a thousand arms.

Each of Avalokiteshvara's hand displays an All Seeing Eye, symbolizing the union of wisdom and skillful means. The first two hands hold a wish ? fulfilling gem, a symbol of the deepest powers of the human psyche. The next five hold a lotus, a bow, a vase, a rosary, and a wheel.

What does Buddha means?

Buddha literally means ''awakened'' or ''that which has become aware' Buddha is the title not a name. Buddha comes from the Sanskrit budh i,e ''to awaken'', ''to know'', or ''to become aware''. This title was given to a man named ''Siddhartha Gautama'' 2500 years ago in Nepal.

Wo was Buddha?

Siddhartha Gautama was born into a royal family in Lumbini, Southern Nepal, in 563 BC. He was the son of the king Suddhodhana and the Queen Mayadevi. The Queen died seven days afer his birth. Her younger sister Prajapait Gotami, who was also married with the King Suddhodhana raised the prince Gautama.

On the fifth day of his birth, during the naming ceremony the child had given the name ''Siddhartha''. It means ''Wish fulfilled''. Siddhartha family name was Gautama. Many Brahmans were invited to the palace for the naming ceremony. The brahmans annouched that this child will become a great King or a great holy man. His father wished that his son become the great king, kept away from the religious teaching and human suffering.

At tha age of 16, he was married with his cousin of same age Princessin Yasodhara. She gave a birth son named ''Rahula''. Rahula means chain.Siddhartha Gautama spends 29 years of his life as prince in palace.

One day Siddhatha Gautama went out of the palace to the pleasure park to see the world outside. He saw four things that had changed his life.

Old Man
Dissease Man
Crippled Man
Death Man

These four unexpected sights served to increase th urge in him to loathe and renounce the world. He decided to leave the world in search of Truth and Eternal peace. He leave the palace at that night as Yasodhara and Rahul were in deep sleep.

He explored the different teaching religions and philosphies to find the key to human happiness. After a long years of study and meditations, he finally found the middle path and was enlightened.

After enlightenement, he is known as buddha. He spent the rest of his life teaching the principles of
Buddhism- called the Dharma, or Truth until his death the age of 80.

About Lokta ?

The raw material Lokta is a bark of the Lokta plant - a sapling stick of about 5 to 7 feet in length.The word Lokta refers to one of the local species of Daphne Cannabina or Daphne Papyracea - a small woody plant of Laurel family. It is also familiar to Nepalese people by the name of Baruwa or Kaagte Paat. Best quality of Lokta stick usually grows and exists at an attitude of 6000 to 10000 ft. over the highlands of Nepal.

October signals the season beginning Lokta Collection. It is harvested alike the sugarcane stick by cutting it on the stem, about 30 cm above ground level. This plant has got a specific features of regeneration to maturity again within 4 to 5 years after cut despite of being destroyed.The Lokta stick if not removed from the forest in its' ideal maturity, it fades, dries up and decays within a couple of months in due course of rain, storm and sun. Thus, by plucking Lokta sticks out, neither the forest is destroyed, nor it harms to fragile forest ecology. Large number of people get employed and the local Government Authorities also get benefit by the royalty revenue derived from the tax and fee against issuance of the permission to collect.
